Preventing Human Trafficking In Christian Communities

Seminar Description: The Joy Smith Foundation’s mission is that every Canadian man, woman and child is educated and empowered to stay safe from manipulation, force or abuse of power designed to lure and exploit them in the sex trade or forced labour.

Human trafficking, the buying and selling of human beings, happens every day in Canada. Every day, children are lured and groomed into the sex trade and are manipulated, bought, sold and abused. This can be stopped.

Christians around the world need to be the leaders in valuing human lives by being aware of how it happens and speaking out to prevent it from occurring in their families, churches and communities.

Katelyn Campbell will discuss what human trafficking is, what the signs of it are and how churches and the Christian community can mobilize and engage in this issue to bring attention to it. It has come to our attention that traffickers often focus on luring the children in the church community into trafficking because many of the church community are unaware that human traffickers that do this and that leaves their children very vulnerable. She will share how individuals can approach these subjects with their children as parents raise them in a world where human trafficking is so prevalent. She will provide information to equip the church community on how to prevent this horrendous crime from reaching children, societies most vulnerable.

THE JOY SMITH FOUNDATION

The Joy Smith Foundation, a registered Canadian charity, stands as Canada's foremost authority on the prevention and intervention of human trafficking. With a resolute dedication, the Foundation provides vital support to survivors of this abhorrent crime. Since 2012, our efforts have aided over 7,000 human trafficking survivors and their families, facilitating their restoration through reuniting, healing, and successful reintegration into their communities.

In 2021, the Joy Smith Foundation underwent a significant evolution with the establishment of the National Human Trafficking Education Centre. The Centre provides education and tools to help Canadians across the country learn to recognize the signs of human trafficking to prevent this crime from occurring. The Education Centre offers an extensive array of programs, including webinars, in- person seminars, virtual training, and more. These educational initiatives cater to diverse audiences, including youth, parents, educators, police officers, survivors, social workers, front-line responders, medical professionals, and individuals working within the justice system.

Katelyn Campbell Background

Katelyn Campbell is our Program Director here at The Joy Smith Foundation Inc. and has been a part of our team since the beginning in 2011. Katelyn

holds a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) with a Major in Criminology and Psychology.

Katelyn is the granddaughter of our founder, Joy Smith, and has spent countless hours working alongside her and supporting her in her tireless work

as one of Canada’s leading anti-human trafficking activists. Katelyn has had the privilege of accompanying Mrs. Smith while she was a Member

of Parliament for Kildonan – St. Paul (2004-2015) to Ottawa and was present over the period that Mrs. Smith passed her two laws in the House of

Commons, Bill C-268, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (minimum sentence for offences involving trafficking of persons under the age of eighteen years) and Bill C-310, An Act to Amend the Criminal

Code (trafficking in persons).

Katelyn has been volunteering with The Joy Smith Foundation since its inception in 2011. All her life, she has been driven toward social justice issues, and has admired the tireless work of her

grandmother. This work inspired her to pursue her education in Criminology and Psychology, with hopes of gaining a better understanding of various social justice issues within our society today, and to ultimately embark on her own personal career with helping others. Throughout Katelyn’s time with the Foundation, she has met with survivors, john’s, and traffickers, and has seen first- hand the positive impact that this work has had on thousands of lives.

Katelyn is an integral part of our team here at the Foundation, and in producing all of our education modules for students, teachers, parents, families, and more. She has been able to draw upon her education, her life experience, as well as work hand in hand with Mrs. Smith, to create these

important resources. Katelyn is a big believer in using education to empower and educate others in the fight against human trafficking, and while working together, believes we too can put a stop to this horrendous crime.

Growing up, Katelyn was a dedicated scholar athlete. She found a passion for sports at a very young age, playing basketball and volleyball at a competitive level. Her many achievements include being a part of the Team Manitoba basketball roster and being awarded Athlete of the Year. She later went on to play her final year at college as a member of the women’s basketball team at CMU. Katelyn’s love for the game led her to coach, where she directed her passion and knowledge towards teaching youth all about the game, and about maintaining a dedicated work ethic in their studies
