Social Enterprise as Ministry: How The Local Church Can Empower the Marginalized Through Meaningful Work
Rebecca Sherbino is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Raw Carrot, a social enterprise ministry dedicated to empowering local churches to provide meaningful employment, poverty reduction and community to individuals facing barriers to traditional work. She holds an undergraduate degree in Global Development, Peace, and Justice and a master’s in international development. Her passion for working with marginalized communities was shaped by her work in sustainable community development in New Guinea, Malawi and Sudan, having lived in Africa for 5 years. Apon her return to Canada, God opened her eyes to the lack of opportunities faced by vulnerable populations in Canada and the need for more than a handout, but a hand UP.
Rebecca's commitment to sustainable social justice and her entrepreneurial and innovative approach to poverty alleviation exemplify her dedication to empowering marginalized individuals through the dignity of work.
Over the last decade, The Raw Carrot has expanded to five locations (with more on the way!) in partnership with churches across Ontario, with soup sales of over $200,000/year providing meaningful employment to over 40 individuals on social assistance.
